Sump pump replacement, backups and discharge in Troy

Updated October 19, 2026 · referral service, not a contractor

Nearly every Troy home built since the 1970s has a sump, and nearly every one of those pumps is on its second or third replacement. The failure points are the same across the city: a pump past its 7–10 year life, a check valve that lets water fall back, a float stuck against the pit wall, a discharge line that freezes in February or dumps six feet from the foundation, and no backup for the storm that takes the power out.

Signs it's time

What a proper replacement looks like

A cast-iron submersible sized to the inflow, a new check valve, a solid lid with a sealed cord grommet, and a float that can't snag. In pits that run hard, a dual-pump setup with an alternator so one pump isn't doing all the work. Many Troy contractors also recommend a high-water alarm that texts you; cheap insurance for a finished basement.

Backups: battery or water-powered

The June 25–26, 2021 storms (FEMA DR-4607, Oakland County designated) and the August 11, 2014 storm (4–6 inches in about four hours) both knocked power out across the region while the ground was saturated. A battery backup runs for hours; a water-powered backup runs as long as city water pressure holds. On a large Troy lot with a long discharge run, confirm the backup can push water that far.

Discharge

Troy lots are big enough to do this right: a buried line to daylight well away from the house, with a freeze-resistant outlet or an air-gap fitting near the foundation so an iced line doesn't dead-head the pump. Never into the sanitary sewer. If your line crosses a sidewalk or drains to the street, check with the city's engineering staff first.

Permits

Sump pumps are plumbing work in Troy. The Building Department at 500 W. Big Beaver is paperless; permits and inspection requests go through BS&A Online, and the city publishes a log of permits issued, where residential basement waterproofing and sump jobs appear regularly. The contractor should pull the permit.

HomeGuide national averages: $650–$2,000 for a pump replacement or install; battery backups add several hundred dollars. Not a Troy quote.
